Future Cities Canada was founded in 2018 by five organizations: the McConnell Foundation, TD Bank Group, Evergreen, Maison de l'innovation sociale and Community Foundations of Canada.
A growing network of partners is supporting this collaborative platform and participating initiative-wide, as well as through specific programs and projects.
The McConnell Foundation is a private Canadian foundation that develops and applies innovative approaches to social, cultural, economic and environmental challenges through granting and investing, capacity building, convening and co-creation with its grantees, partners and public. McConnell Foundation is a founding partner of Future Cities Canada.
The Government of Canada has selected Evergreen, working in partnership with OpenNorth, and their Future Cities Canada collaborative platform to deliver advisory and capacity-building services for Smart Cities Challenge applicant and finalist communities as they explore and implement smart cities approaches. This funding is awarded under the new Smart Cities Community Support Program.
TD Ready Commitment
TD Bank Group is the sixth largest bank in North America by branches. Through its corporate citizen platform, The Ready Commitment, the Bank is targeting $1 billion by 2030 towards community giving in four areas critical to opening doors for a more inclusive and sustainable tomorrow – Financial Security, Vibrant Security, Vibrant Planet, Connected Communities and Better Health. The TD Bank Group is a founding partner of Future Cities Canada.
Suncor Energy Foundation
The Suncor Energy Foundation is a private, charitable foundation established by Suncor Energy Inc. to support registered Canadian charitable organizations. Collaboration and co-creation are at the heart of the Foundation’s community investment approach to supporting activities that build community resilience, strengthen indigenous relations and transition to sustainable energy systems. The Suncor Energy Foundation provides significant support to the Future Cities Canada collaborative platform and its associated programs.
Evergreen is a national non-profit dedicated to making cities flourish. Since 1991, Evergreen has been hard at work transforming spaces into great places so that communities can thrive. They believe that by connecting people, natural and built worlds, we can enable Canadians to do great things that will shape our cities for the better. Evergreen is a founding partner of Future Cities Canada.
Maison de l’innovation sociale
Maison de l’innovation sociale (MIS) is an organization dedicated to developing social innovation capabilities and the emergence of social entrepreneurs in Quebec. MIS is a founding partner of Future Cities Canada.
Community Foundations of Canada
Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) is a national organization that mobilizes a diverse network of community-based philanthropists to achieve greater collective impact across the country. CFC leverages the power of collaboration to address complex issues facing Canadian communities, such as belonging, inclusion and reconciliation. CFC is a founding partner of Future Cities Canada.
OpenNorth is Canada’s leading not-for-profit organization specialized in open data, open government, community engagement, open smart cities and civic technology. Its network extends across Canada and globally through communities of practice and open government partners. OpenNorth is the lead technical partner of the Community Solutions Network, a program that delivers advisory and capacity-building services for Smart Cities Challenge applicant and finalist communities as they explore and implement smart cities approaches.
