Program Overview presented at: Nature Based Solutions for Climate Change Innovation Workshop

In partnership with ICLEI Canada, the Community Solutions Network delivered an innovation workshop for Prairies and Ontario communities who are interested in approaches to nature-based solutions for climate change. Evergreen and the Community Solutions Network along with ICLEI Canada are partnering to deliver a series of innovation workshops on the relationship between data, technology, and climate resilience.

This session focused on exploring the opportunities for adaptation that lie in investing in the protection or enhancement of nature to strengthen people’s resilience. Known today as nature-based solutions, these interventions can be extremely cost-effective, either as a substitute or a complement to traditional infrastructure. Working with nature can also provide additional co-benefits, not the least of which being storing carbon rather than causing emissions.

This interactive workshop provided an opportunity for municipalities, Indigenous communities, municipal networks, academics, and subject-matter experts from across the Prairies and Ontario to connect, share, and ask questions around how to implement nature-based solutions in their communities to advance action on climate adaptation and resilience.

Following two presentations on building the case for nature-based solutions and how they have been successfully implemented in Canadian communities, the session led into a hands-on activity. Collectively, in breakouts, how to mainstream possible measures into our planning were discussed, what possible co-benefits and funding avenues there could be, as well as the policies needed to solidify these solutions and how we can continue to build traction in the community for this work.

The Community Solutions Network is a program of Future Cities Canada. Led by Evergreen, the Network is designed to help communities build service area capacity and improve the lives of residents using data and connected technology approaches. This program is funded by the Government of Canada.
