The second Round of the Housing Supply Challenge invited applicants to propose solutions focused on pre-development processes.

The second Round of the Housing Supply Challenge — Getting Started: Pre-development Processes — invited applicants to propose and develop locally relevant solutions that remove barriers to the development of housing that is affordable, with a specific focus on the pre-construction phase of projects. Applications for the Getting Started Round are now closed.

Housing Supply Challenge Second Round Pre-Launch

On May 19, 2021, CMHC President & CEO Romy Bowers, CMHC VP of Innovation Steffan Jones, and CMHC Senior Manager Brigit Knecht discussed the Housing Supply Challenge and its second round, Getting Started: Pre-development Processes. With up to $40M in funding available, the Getting Started round seeks solutions that will address barriers to housing supply by improving pre-development processes for housing that is affordable.

This info session and FAQ highlights key dates and information relating to the application and evaluation process of the Getting Started Round.

Writing Successful Proposals

Hosted by Evergreen and CMHC, this Proposal Writing Workshop provide guidance on how to submit a strong application for the Getting Started Round. Grant writing experts from Evergreen share best practices and tips specific to the Getting Started application process, and short-listed applicants from the previous Challenge round share their experiences of the application process.

World Café: Improving Pre-Development Processes 

Hosted by Evergreen and CMHC, this World Café convened housing and civic sector actors across Canada to share knowledge and explore the range of issues encompassed in the Getting Started Round. Discussions across the nine tables were focused on three key themes in housing pre-development: best practices, cross-sector partnerships, and community engagement. The introduction and reconvening sessions in the main room were recorded.

Systems and Design Thinking Workshop 

Evergreen hosted Systems and Design Thinking Workshops in French and English for potential applicants to the Housing Supply Challenge Getting Started Round. These workshops were facilitated by design thinking experts Lise Clement and John Purkis.

Communications Workshop

Presented by Evergreen with support from Firefly Junction Inc., this virtual workshop is an opportunity for all shortlisted applicants to gain experience in different communications methods and techniques, and build confidence in applying different communications tools moving forward, into the final Stage 2 application and beyond.
