Indigenous Municipal Relations: Beyond Consultation

How to build and nurture meaningful Indigenous-municipal relations on the path to reconciliation: a guide for planners and city builders.

This discussion paper will make use of the idea of relationship-building as a framework within which to discuss consultation. Part one of the paper will look at treaty-making as a way to illustrate both how and why Indigenous–non–Indigenous relationships soured, but also where there is potential for healing. Part two will look at the duty to consult and accommodate in order to examine one way in which these issues are being addressed currently. The conclusion will bring us to the question: “So what do we do now?”
